This building first served as a steam bakery owned and operated by Henry Rott, a German immigrant who worked as a baker and confectioner in Randsburg from 1898 to 1904. In 1904 he sold one half of the business to Mrs. W. O. (Martha) Lidy, and in 1905 they purchased an Edison Heating and Lighting Plant for the bakery in what now houses The Joint. In the Rand Mining District, in the mining camp established in 1895 and also known as Randsburg, the business became a center of local social life for almost 70 years and the town's longest family-run business. In 1955, James Guyett and Olga Guyett bought the building, which Olga said had been constructed in 1927 to house a bakery, and turned it into the bar and restaurant known as The Joint. James Guyett, of Irish descent, was a decorated Purple Heart recipient and Navy corpsman who served in the South Pacific in World War II, and he also worked as a hard rock miner and business owner, pulling gold, silver, and tungsten from the ground under a government contract for tungsten. Olga Rizzardini Guyett, of Italian descent, was born in Falls River, Massachusetts, on Sept. 24, 1911. After her first husband, Charles Shotwell, died in San Bernardino in 1948, she moved with her three children to Randsburg, where her brother Mac owned Economy Market, a store where, as she later recalled, everything needed was sold, including groceries, hardware, dynamite, and shoes. Six years later she married James Guyett. Before his death in 1968, James removed the restaurant portion of the business and purchased a player piano, pool tables, and a juke box, enabling Olga to continue the family business. She walked to work every day, never drove a car, and became widely loved in the area. Olga died in 2012 just short of her 101st birthday, after her 100th birthday celebration was held at The Joint. James and Olga's legacy continued through their children and grandchildren, including second-generation owners Charles, Eddie and Neil Shotwell Sr. and Bernadette Hyles, followed by third-generation owners Neil Jr. and Hollie Shotwell.
