This house, built in 1832 and owned in 1863 by Col. Robert Buckner, a War of 1812 veteran, served as the headquarters of CSA General J.H. Morgan on July 7-8, 1863. Raiders crossing the river on captured steamers were interrupted when the US gunboat ELK arrived. They exchanged fire, and then ELK retired after its ammunition was exhausted. After crossing the river, CSA forces burned the steamer ALICE DEAN, whose hulk lies at the river bottom to the west.
