Pima Butte is a mountain summit in Arizona’s Gila Valley about eight miles north of present-day Maricopa, rising 1,660 feet above sea level and standing out as a prominent landmark in the desert. Its historical importance lies chiefly in its closeness to the 1857 Battle of Pima Butte, which was named for the mountain. More than a place of great elevation, it has mattered as a recognizable point in the valley, connecting the region’s geography to an episode of mid-19th-century history.
