Independent Fire Company No. 1 was organized on September 10, 1910. Its first fire hall stood at 6th and Canal Streets, and a Ladies Auxiliary was formed in 1911. On September 25, 1915, the company moved into the new Independent Borough Hall on the southeast corner of 7th and Maple Streets. Its fire trucks increased in power and capacity over the years, from a hand drawn hose cart in 1910-1911, to a motorized combination hose and chemical wagon in 1911-1918, a Triple Combination Seagraves vehicle in 1918-1942, a Mack Triple Combination Canopy Cab vehicle in 1942-1969, a Maxim 1000 gallon a minute vehicle in 1969-1982, and a Pierce Arrow 1250 gallon pumper with a 750 gallon booster tank from 1982 onward. In May 1978, the company dedicated its new Fire House at 712 Maple Street, an addition that was part of the former Harrison School Building.
