Ojito Wilderness in New Mexico, north of Albuquerque, was established in 2005 as a protected wilderness administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Covering 11,823 acres, it preserves rugged desert terrain of multicolored sandstone, terraces, box canyons, and arroyos while allowing low-impact recreation such as primitive camping, hiking, and horseback riding. The law creating it also placed certain lands into trust for the Pueblo of Zia Indian Reservation while preserving public access. Despite its dry appearance, the area holds Jurassic fossils, including petrified wood and remains linked to Seismosaurus, as well as evidence of Ancient Puebloan, Spanish, and Navajo use over many centuries.
