Fire in nature is both destructive and essential, a natural ecological process that has shaped the New Jersey Pine Barrens for thousands of years by promoting growth, recycling nutrients, and creating crucial habitat that would otherwise disappear. Fire can harm environmental health through extreme heat that kills beneficial soil organisms and changes soil chemistry, while runoff can carry ash into waterways and negatively affect fish and plants. It can also threaten vegetation, wildlife, human lives, and property by destroying habitat, decreasing diversity, interrupting the food chain, and bringing extreme financial costs for wildfire suppression and rebuilding. Yet fire also recycles nutrients by turning dead vegetation into nutrient-rich ash, thins the canopy so sunlight reaches the forest floor, stimulates new growth, and, when low in intensity or deliberately prescribed, reduces wildfire risk by consuming leaf litter and other fuels. By burning some forest areas while leaving others intact, fire creates varied ecological conditions that support a range of species. Several plants are especially adapted to it: bracken fern leaves dead fronds standing so they ignite easily and remove competing plants, then sends up new shoots from underground rhizomes within days; blueberries and huckleberries store extra energy in protected root systems and quickly sprout after fire, aided by the ash; and pitch pines withstand and recover from fire with thick bark, dormant buds that produce epicormic branches when needles die, buds at the base if living wood dies, and resin-sealed serotinous cones that open after fire to spread seeds.
