Built in 1881 by the NY and Long Branch RR for the Warren Ave, Spring Lake NJ Station Crossing, this 3-sided watchman’s shanty was moved to NJMT in 1965 and served as NJMT’s first souvenir shop from 1966 to 1971. Before electronic lights and gates, watchmen manned railroad crossings to protect cars and pedestrian traffic from trains, and most of these men were near retirement or partially disabled.
