On April 16, 1865, Confederate Captain Nat Clanton's battery stood astride Summerville Road when Union forces launched a three-pronged night attack from the northwest. Elements of the Third and Fourth Iowa and the Tenth Missouri passed beneath Clanton's guns in darkness lit only by flashes of cannon and small arms fire. Federal troops quickly overran Confederate entrenchments and pushed down Summerville Road to capture Waddell's battery on Red Hill and the 14th Street Bridge across the Chattahoochee. An hour after the attack began, the battle of Girard-Columbus had ended.
