Catholics in the Moreauville area along Bayou des Glaises first worshiped in a church built in 1858 and known as St. Hyacinthe's Mission Chapel, administered by St. Paul's Church in Mansura, on property donated on April 9, 1858 by widow Aimee Joffrion Boyer. The mission chapel's first priest in 1858 was Rev. Thomas Rebours, who became the first pastor of the Moreauville church in 1860, and on February 2, 1860 Bishop Auguste Martin of Natchitoches elevated St. Hyacinthe's to an independent parish. After about twenty years, structural problems led to its replacement by a second church by 1882 under Rev. Paul E. Simon, when the church's name was changed to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. That fifteen-year-old church burned to the ground on Easter Sunday, April 22, 1897 because of unattended burning candles, and Rev. Constantine Brahic completed a third church in 1898; all three churches were of wood and similar design. Soon afterward, he petitioned the Daughters of the Cross to establish the first parochial school, St. Francis de Sales, which opened in 1899 and existed until 1920. On Christmas Day 1908, lightning burned the third church, rectory, school, and convent, leading to the decision to build a fourth church of brick under Rev. Regis Gimbert, in the Romanesque style and designed by Theodore Brune. The incomplete shell was in use by the end of 1910, and the front facade was not completed until 1934 by Rev. Henri Jacquemain, who personally crafted the altars. Msgr. Stanley DeKeuwer redecorated the sanctuary in 1944 and established Sacred Heart School in 1948, staffed by the Daughters of the Cross, while the Order of Our Lady of Sorrows has staffed the school since 1963. In 1960-61 Msgr. John Timmermans carried out a complete renovation of the church and installed the present marble altars, and by 2004 the church again needed renovation, directed by Rev. George Krosfield. Anniversary celebrations marked the church's 100th in 1960-61, 135th in 1995, and 150th in 2010.
