Mekasukey Academy was established in a handsome building erected by the Seminole Nation and opened for Seminole boys in 1891. "Mikasuki" was the name of an ancient "war" town whose people were noted for courage. From 1914, the school was coeducational, and it closed in 1930. The building later burned accidentally.
