Sherman's Advance

On the night of Dec. 4, 1864, headquarters of the Military Division of the Mississippi under Maj. Gen. W.T. Sherman, USA, and headquarters of the 17th Corps under Maj. Gen. F.P. Blair, USA, were established at this point, 1 mile northeast of Cameron, Station No. 5-1/2 on the CRR, and 1 mile south of Paris Hill Academy. Headquarters of the Right Wing under Howard and headquarters of the 15th Corps under Osterhaus were across the Ogeechee River beyond Cameron. Headquarters of the Left Wing under Slocum and headquarters of the 20th Corps under Williams were on the Middle Ground road south of Sylvania. Headquarters of the 14th Corps was near Jacksonboro, on the old Augusta-Savannah road north of Sylvania. The next day, Gen. Sherman advanced to Oliver where a Confederate force was entrenching.
