Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge in Mississippi lies about 15 miles southwest of Cleveland and 2.5 miles east of Dahomy. Encompassing 9,691 acres, it is the largest remaining tract of bottomland hardwood-forested wetlands in northwestern Mississippi. The refuge was established in 1990 after The Nature Conservancy purchased 9,269 acres and leased them to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which completed acquisition in 1993. Its present size also includes a 162-acre tract transferred in 1991 by the Mississippi Department of Transportation and a 260-acre 16th section tract leased from the West Bolivar School Board. It preserves a large, relatively intact Delta wetland forest that has become increasingly rare in this region.
