In five enormous warehouses at Fort Union, the United States Army stored, inventoried, organized, and redistributed thousands of tons of food and equipment to support troops operating in the Southwest, with two thousand to three thousand freight wagons a year being off-loaded there. Civilian storekeepers and enlisted personnel handled a constant flow of crates, boxes, and barrels containing salted meat and fish, hardtack, coffee, tea, sugar, salt, vinegar, hominy, corn meal, onions, potatoes, canned and bottled foods, flour, clothing, bedding, tents, cooking gear, paper and ink, heating stoves, furniture, lamps, lanterns, tools, and building materials. In 1870, Fort Union had one hundred civilian employees, about forty of them teamsters who drove wagons carrying supplies from these warehouses to distant outlying posts. A typical shipment sent from Fort Union to Fort Marcy in July 1868 included bacon, breakfast bacon, flour, green, roasted, and Java coffee, corn meal, hominy, brown and white sugar, vinegar, candles, common soap, pickles, officers' salt, and pepper, and twelve other similar shipments left the storehouses for southwestern Army posts during the same month. These supplies went to posts in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma, including Albuquerque, Fort Bascom, Fort Bayard, Fort Craig, Fort Cummings, Fort Lowell, Ojo Caliente, Fort Marcy, Fort McRae, Santa Fe, Fort Seldon, Fort Stanton, Fort Sumner, Fort Tularosa, Fort Wingate, Fort Garland, Fort Apache, Camp Beale's Springs, Fort Bowie, Camp Colorado, Fort Crittenden, Camp Date Creek, Camp Goodwin, Fort Grant, Fort Huachuca, Camp Hualapai, Camp Ilges, Camp La Paz, Camp Lewis, Fort McDowell, Fort Mohave, Camp Pinal, Camp Reno, Camp Rucker, Camp San Carlos, Fort Thomas, Fort Verde, Camp Wallen, Camp Willow Grove, Fort Yuma, Whipple Barracks, Fort Bliss, Camp Concordia, Fort Supply, and Camp Nichols.
