From this point, General Nicholas Herkimer, known as General Herkimer, started on August 3, 1777, to take command of the men who had assembled in answer to his call to fight in defense of the Mohawk Valley. He then followed a 40 mile route from August 3-6, 1777, for the relief of Fort Stanwix. The Battle of Oriskany on August 6, fought between Herkimer's men and St. Leger with his Indians, was the turning point of the Revolution.
