Phinizy Swamp Nature Park is a one thousand one hundred-acre park in Augusta, Georgia, within the Savannah River floodplain and part of the broader seven thousand-acre Phinizy Swamp wetland formed by Butler Creek and the river. Named for Victor Francois Phinizy, whose family settled there after seventeen seventy-eight, the area was altered over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for farming and pasture. After Augusta acquired the land in nineteen seventy-three and modernized wastewater treatment in nineteen ninety-three, the site was restored as a wetland ecosystem and used in tertiary treatment. Today it unites wildlife habitat, water research, environmental education, and notable bird biodiversity in a major example of urban wetland restoration.
