Small groups of British scouts appeared opposite Fort Meigs on April 26, 1813, and the main body of British troops arrived two days later. After constructing artillery batteries, General Procter opened the siege on May 1. Within Fort Meigs, the Americans erected traverses, or large mounds of earth, across the length of the post to protect themselves from incoming artillery rounds. The battle lasted from May 1 until May 5.
