In 2003, professional archaeologists investigated Camp Milton on behalf of the City of Jacksonville, searching for evidence of Civil War activities and examining the camp’s defensive earthworks through pedestrian inspection, shovel testing, metal detection, and the excavation of large trenches at measured intervals on a grid pattern. Of the 15,840 linear feet of earthworks reported to have been built, only 725 feet remain, and the remaining earthworks can be seen by following the path 850 feet to the fork in the boardwalk.
