Saugatuck Dunes State Park is a 1,000-acre public recreation area on the Lake Michigan shore between Saugatuck and Holland, valued for its quiet, largely undeveloped mix of forest, open dunes, and shoreline. The land was once part of the estate of Dorr E. Felt, inventor of the comptometer; his 1928 summer home, the Felt Mansion, remains within the park and is being restored. After serving a seminary, a residence for cloistered nuns, a state police post, and with nearby buildings used as a prison, the broader property was acquired for park purposes in 1978, preserving its distinct dune landscape, beach, and hiking trails for public use.
