The V-1 was a German-built war machine commonly known as a "Buzz Bomb," a new weapon and precursor of the cruise missile that Adolf Hitler unleashed against London in 1944 as a pilotless "flying bomb." Officially designated FZG-76, it carried an anti-aircraft designation as a ruse to throw Allied spies off track, and in Britain it was known as the "doodlebug." One of only two "Buzz Bombs" in the United States, it is intended as a memorial to those from Putnam County who lost their lives in World War II.
