Fowey Rocks Light, completed in 1878 southeast of Key Biscayne, stands over the reef line at the entrance to Hawk Channel and continues to guide navigation through the Florida Keys. Built to replace the Cape Florida Light for this dangerous stretch of water, it is a cast-iron screw-pile lighthouse rising 110 feet above the sea. Its name traces to Fowey Rocks, named after HMS Fowey, wrecked nearby in 1748. The lighthouse survived the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, was automated in 1975, and in 2012 passed to the National Park Service. It remains the last operating original offshore manned reef light in the Florida Keys.
