From the beginning, Neahkahnie Mountain was the source of deep meaning for the First People. Signs of the spirit were all around them in the forest and its animals, in the ocean, in the seasons and the sky, and in the weather that marked their days. In oft-repeated tales, the spirits were individuals with personalities and relationships with each other and with the People, who taught their children to remember the stories word for word.
