William Robert Anderson was born one-half mile north of here on June 17, 1921, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943, served during World War II, and took part in 11 combat patrols in the Pacific. As commanding officer of the first atomic submarine, the USS Nautilus, he led the first transpolar voyage under the North Pole in August 1958. President Dwight D. Eisenhower awarded him the Legion of Merit. He later represented Tennessee's Sixth District in Congress from 1965 until 1973. He died in Leesburg, Virginia, on February 25, 2007, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
