The site was occupied by the Mechanic Street Garage, built in 1920 by Fred Allen to service a new automobile business. Fire destroyed the building in 1950, and Louis T. Oster rebuilt it as a Chevrolet agency. The Jordan Free Library Association purchased the building in 1970.
