The Pony Express was the first attempt to provide fast mail service to California, carried on horseback in the mid-1800s by very young men whose personal drive and bravery brought mail and other deliverables to the western territories. This cabin stood roughly 60 miles southwest of what is now Elko, in the same area as Sherman Station. Structures like this one served as resting places and mount exchange stations for the couriers during their journeys. The cabin was moved to its current location in 1960, restored, and in 1975 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
