Madeira, a steel schooner barge built in Chicago in 1900 for carrying Great Lakes cargo, sank off Minnesota's Lake Superior coast on November 28, 1905. Towed by the steamer William Edenborn during a violent storm, it was cut loose when winds, snow, and heavy swells threatened the towing vessel. About two hours later Madeira was driven into Gold Rock. One crewman reached shore with a safety line, allowing eight others to escape, but the first mate was lost with the vessel. Later explored and salvaged in the twentieth century, the wreck now lies in three sections and remains a well-known historic shipwreck site.
