The F-9 Cougar was the Navy's first swept-wing fighter. It entered the fleet in 1954 in configurations as a fighter, attack, and photographic reconnaissance aircraft. It was flown by the world famous Blue Angels from 1955 to 1957, and later served as an advanced jet trainer for the Navy until retiring from service in 1969. With a wingspan of 34 feet 6 inches, a length of 44 feet 5 inches, a height of 12 feet 3 inches, a maximum speed of 705 miles per hour, a range of 600 miles, and a gross weight of 20,600 pounds, the F-9 is on display at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, Naval Air Station Pensacola, with more than 100 other aircraft spanning the history of Naval Aviation.
