On 25 June 1950, Communist North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea. On 27 July 1953, an armistice was signed and the 38th parallel boundary was re-established. The war left 36,500 American soldiers killed in action and 7,500 missing in action or still unaccounted for, and it was among the most destructive conflicts of the modern era.
