Blackhorse Tavern opened in 1783 and became a center of resistance during the whiskey insurrection, which began as a protest movement against the 1781 Whiskey Tax. From this site in 1784, whiskey rebels sent out a call to the militia as a gesture of defiance toward the Federal Government, and leaders of the rebellion opened stolen mail sacks in the backroom. Federal Military Forces were summoned to Pennsylvania to quell the rebellion, and a truce was signed. The tax was repealed in 1803, and the tavern was torn down in 1910.
