Pleasant Hill Baptist Church began in 1875 with a Bible study in the home of John Owens and 15 charter members. Richard Cribb became the first pastor in 1877, when the church joined the Waccamaw Association. Its first building, approximately 20 x 35 feet and constructed of fitted logs, stood one mile south on the land of Riley Baxley. In 1890, the log building was dismantled and reassembled at this one-acre site given by A. A. Williams. In 1912, a sanctuary approximately 23 x 50 feet replaced the log building, and a pool was dug on the east side near the church for same-day baptizing. In 1940, Sunday School classes were moved inside with the addition of 8 classrooms and a porch onto the sanctuary. On Sunday morning, February 3, 1952, at 10 A.M., the church building was destroyed by fire. In 1952, the membership was 385, and available records indicate that 21 pastors served the church from 1877 to 1952.
