Young's Spring
History
9
At Young's Spring on Upham Brook, one block southwest, slaves often gathered on weekends for religious services and social events. There Gabriel, a slave of William Prosser, planned a slave rebellion scheduled for 30 August 1800. Gabriel and his followers intended to capture Richmond and demand their freedom, but the attack never occurred because a turbulent thunderstorm made the roads and bridges to the city impassable. After Governor James Monroe learned of the plot, he mustered the militia, and eventually most of the conspirators were captured and twenty-six slaves were executed.
