Wizard Island is a volcanic cinder cone rising from the west end of Crater Lake in Oregon and the most conspicuous remnant of eruptions that followed the collapse of Mount Mazama about 7,700 years ago. After that violent eruption emptied the magma chamber and created the deep caldera that became Crater Lake, later eruptions built several cones on the caldera floor. Wizard Island is the highest and only one to rise above the present lake level, with a summit crater at its top. Named in 1885 by William Gladstone Steel, it remains one of Crater Lake’s defining landmarks and clear evidence that volcanic activity continued after Mazama’s collapse.
