Below the black basaltic buttes of San Acacia, seen to the southeast, the Camino Real followed a narrow passage formed by these buttes along the Rio Grande. The Spanish called the area Acomilla, or Acomita, meaning little Acoma. Along this section of the route, hostile Apache frequently waited in ambush, so travelers had to organize into well-armed caravans to assure their safety.
