The Historic Evans Road Trail's Harrison Segment follows or borders the southern reach of historic Evans Road within Selma, where the road passed through the original town center and was often called Hill Street on land deeds as late as the 1970s and 1980s. Modern Evans Road runs from Stone Oak Parkway in San Antonio to the Selma Visitor's Center, though historically it continued farther. Between Stage Stop Park and the John S. Harrison Historic property, part of the original road was overtaken by houses along the east side of Winged Foot Street, so the route turns into the woods along the creek bank, reemerges at Harrison Park, continues through the park, and ends at the Olympia Hills golf course. Evans Road was named for Robert B. Evans, who moved to the area in the mid-1800's. Born in Tennessee in 1821, he left in 1847 to pan for gold in California and earned enough there to buy property near what is now Bracken in 1865. The Evans family home was built in 1882 at 7950 E. Evans Road, about 2.5 miles northwest of the Selma Stage Stop. His wife, Rebecca Wilmot Murchison, was born on August 12, 1835, the daughter of Murdock Murchison, who owned a farm across Cibolo Creek from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma. Robert and Rebecca raised nine children. Robert belonged to the Cibolo Masonic Lodge and taught school in Selma in the 1880's. He died in November 1905 and Rebecca died in August 1908, and both were buried in the Evans Cemetery, the old community cemetery, along with Murdock Murchison and his wife.
