Rutgers Gardens, the official botanical garden of Rutgers University in North Brunswick, New Jersey, spans 130 acres of designed gardens, living plant collections, and the adjoining Frank G. Helyar Woods. Established on land acquired in 1917 as Horticultural Farm No. 1, it grew from agricultural research into a major horticultural landscape with extensive displays of dahlias, iris, gladiolus, shrubs, hollies, bamboo, and other specimen trees. Its grounds also preserve New Deal-era structures, including the 1936 Log Cabin and Holly House. After a threatened sale in the 1990s, the garden was preserved through Bruce “Doc” Hamilton’s leadership and gained horticultural landmark status in 2017.
