Alexander Charles Garrett, born in 1832 and remembered by the Scottish Rite Masons of Dallas as the 33 Inspector General Honorary of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, was honored as a great and good Mason whose benign influence was a potent factor in the progress and development of the fraternity for more than half a century. He was also the first Bishop of Northern Texas and of Dallas in the Protestant Episcopal Church. A passage from the Bishop’s diary recalls his early journey out on horseback from Dallas when there were no roads, his failure to find the place, and his return a year later in a buckboard, when Captain John Trent’s house was filled and, for the first time in those wild mountains, the service of the church was celebrated on this spot on Feb. 23, 1878. Garrett died in 1924, and he was memorialized in 1932 to the Glory of God and in memory of his life and faith.
