Founded in 1953 in Columbus, Georgia, the Columbus Museum brings together American art and the history of the surrounding region through permanent displays and temporary exhibitions. Its accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums reflects its standing as an established cultural institution. An important figure in its history was former curator and director Joseph B. Mahan Jr., who played an instrumental role in creating the Institute for the Study of American Cultures in 1983.
