Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown preserves the historic core of the original Sierra Railway of California, later the Sierra Railroad, including a remarkably intact working railroad complex centered on the Jamestown shops. Its roundhouse, machine shop, and related buildings survive as a rare early railroad workplace and are listed as the Sierra Railway Shops Historic District. The railroad was closely tied to Sierra foothills lumber operations, serving mills at Tuolumne and Standard and connecting with mountain logging lines. Widely known as the “Movie Railroad,” it has appeared in more than 200 productions and remains an active site for preservation, train rides, tours, and exhibits.
