In Lubbock, Texas, the American Wind Power Center preserves the history of wind power, especially the American-style windmills that once shaped rural water pumping across the Great Plains. Developed from Billie Wolfe’s preservation work beginning in the early 1960s and founded in 1993 with Coy F. Harris, it grew through the rescue and relocation of rare windmills from Nebraska and elsewhere. The museum now spans 28 acres and holds more than 160 windmills, including many still pumping water, along with wind-electric machines. A modern Vestas turbine powers the site, linking the region’s wind-powered past with its continuing use of wind energy.
