A native of Kentucky, Benton McMillin moved to Celina at an early age and later to Carthage. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1874 and to Congress in 1879, where he served for twenty years. He later served two terms as Governor from 1899 to 1903, promoting the public school system. Known as the “Democratic Warhorse of Tennessee,” he died in Nashville.
