Thus The Legend of the Great Chocolate Wreck…
Lore
Around 9 p.m. on September 27, 1955, O & W freight train ON-2 traveled through Hamilton toward Norwich when someone set a switch to divert it from the main track. Although the engineer quickly braked, the train hurtled up a siding, crashed through Leland Coal Company’s elevated shed, and ran 150 feet beyond. No serious injuries resulted, but two carloads of Nestle products spilled across the area. The next day, throngs of school children combed the grass and scooped up Nestle Crunch, Quik, and chocolate chips to carry away.
