Donivan Slough, named after an early setter, is fed by water runoff from the field in front of it. Although water levels fluctuate seasonally at this site, it remains wet year round. This moist environment allows unique growing opportunities for water-loving plants. Bald cypress and water tupelo grow here, with expanded bases and knees soaking in the water. In spring, wildflowers that depend on the dampness of the slough bloom here. The slough is like a huge sponge, and because plants here do not need to use as much energy to acquire water and nutrients, they are more productive, putting on more leaves and fruit. Abundant water and little disturbance have allowed the trees to grow large over time, creating a lush forest area with a rich understory of plentiful shrubs and distinct wildflowers.
