Newport State Park occupies two thousand three hundred seventy-three acres at the tip of Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula near Europe Lake, protecting eleven miles of Lake Michigan shoreline as the state’s only wilderness-designated state park. Identified for development in 1946 and again recommended in 1958, it was established on September 24, 1964, as Europe Bay State Park and renamed in 1970 after expansion. Additional facilities and land were added through 1978. The surrounding waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay shape its cooler, cloudier, windier conditions. In 2017, it also gained Dark Sky Park status, and it hosts the county’s only public air pollution monitor.
