Haskell-Baker Wetlands is a 927-acre preserve south of Lawrence, Kansas, along the Wakarusa River, with a history that shifted from settler farming to agricultural training land for Haskell and later to mixed institutional ownership. Artificially sustained by levees and flood-control works built in the 1990s, it includes acreage held by Baker University, Haskell Indian Nations University, the University of Kansas, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Recognized as a National Natural Landmark in 1969, the wetlands are significant for their rich biological diversity. Later highway construction plans led to mitigation measures, including roughly 380 acres of adjacent man-made wetlands and part of the Lawrence Loop trail.
