In 1844 the old school bell began its service, and after 80 years of service and 40 years of silence it rang out again in 1964. Its renewed ringing accompanied the golden anniversary of Edward Lee McClain High School, founded in 1914, and honored the past while expressing a promise for the future. The bell tower was erected by F. R. Harris, Bell Boy in 1896, 1897, and 1898.
