Placerita Canyon State Park, on the western San Gabriel Mountains near Santa Clarita, brings together mountain access, historic sites, and unusual natural features. The Tataviam lived in this canyon and the surrounding region since time immemorial. In 1842, when the area was part of Rancho San Francisco, Francisco Lopez made the first documented discovery of gold in California here at the Oak of the Golden Dream. Oil was also discovered in the valley in 1900. The park’s transition between mountain woodland and drier Mojave-related environments supports varied plant life, while the Placerita Fault, distinctive rock formations, and a rare seep of naturally filtered “white oil” add geological significance.
