At Natural Bridge, Confederate militia decisively repulsed Federal forces in a joint U.S. Army and Navy operation to take St. Marks. An Army landing at the lighthouse was prevented from reaching the rear of St. Marks by Confederate opposition at Newport and Natural Bridge, while the Federal flotilla ran aground during its ascent of the river and did not reach St. Marks. Tallahassee would have been the next objective. Federal strength was 893, with 21 killed, 89 wounded, and 148 missing; Confederate strength was 595, with 3 killed, 23 wounded, and none missing. The commanders were Brig. Gen. William Miller for the Confederates, Commander R. W. Shufeldt for the U.S. Navy, and Brig. Gen. John Newton for the U.S. Army, and 500 of the Federal force were reported to have been at Natural Bridge.
