Cokesbury College was the first Methodist college in the world. It was planned at the Christmas conference and named for Bishops Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury. Its corner stone was laid on this site on June 5, 1785, by Asbury. Classes began in 1787. It burned on December 4, 1795. A monument was dedicated in 1968.
