Near this tree, within the walls of Poydras College, James Ryder Randall wrote the immortal lines of “Maryland, My Maryland” at midnight on April 26, 1861. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on January 1st, 1839, and died in Augusta, Georgia, on January 14th, 1908.
