Local farmers used this machine to clear stones from the land. Two golf ball sized holes were picked 180 degrees apart in a stone, and hooks were placed in them for lifting. Horses pulling a chain wound around a drum could raise stones weighing up to 6 tons and move them to a new location. This machine was used to build miles of stone fences.
