Approximately 160,000 men participated in the Battle of Resaca. Union and Confederate forces included units down to regiments, with most Union regiments consisting of from 800 to 1,000 men and most Confederate units by 1864 being smaller, about 600 to 800 men, with many having been combined. Union regiments numbered about 328 at the Battle of Resaca, and Confederate regiments about 257. None were at full strength, yet the battlefield was crowded with men fighting for their cause. About 6,000 were killed and over 30,000 were wounded. Some of those believed to have fought at Resaca died on this battlefield.
